Illegal or not, the robocall that led to the trial of former Gov. Robert L. Ehrlich Jr. aide Paul Schurick was pointless.

Unfortunately for voters, robocalls are now the No. 1 form of direct political communications. Even more disturbing is that fact that the number of American voters receiving them increased from 49 percent in 2008 to 69 percent in 2010.

Pointless is exactly right. Researchers at Yale have determined that "robocalls have a perfect record of never having worked."

So why do politicians do them? Because they can and because consultants like Julius Henson make money selling them.

Robocalls are a waste. A waste of money, a waste of time, and a waste for democracy. Robocalls are pure phone spam. They do nothing to improve our fragile democracy.
