Feds crack down on robo-calls (politics excepted)
Thursday, August 21, 2008Feds crack down on robo-calls (politics excepted)
The Federal Trade Commission has finalized new rules prohibiting telemarketers from calling consumers with recorded messages, known as robo-calls, unless consumers give their permission first. The new rules that take effect next year won't bar pre-recorded informational calls from the likes of dentists reminding people of their appointments, or from pharmacies notifying consumers their prescriptions are ready to be picked up. And you'll still get calls from politicians and their supporters.
Consumers should have the right to opt out of political robo-calls, according to Shaun Dakin of StopPoliticalCalls.org.
