Robocalls — Surprise,
Surprise, Most are Illegal
[ Listen
]
The baby's crying. The dog's barking. You're
trying to cook dinner. And
the phone rings. You pick up and what do you
hear? A recorded message
telling you why you should vote for John
McCain or Barack Obama.
Infuriating? An invasion of privacy? Illegal?
Freedom of speech?
Whatever they are, some people are just fed up
with automatic marketing
or "Robocalls," as they're commonly known. The
National Political Do
Not Contact Registry is one such group —
they're advocating an outright
ban. The calls are already illegal in several
states and, depending how
they're executed, are illegal in California.
Yet the laws, as currently
written, are all–but impossible to enforce. So
how do you silence your
phone? Or does freedom of speech trump this
annoyance?
- Shaun Dakin, founder of National Political Do Not Contact Registry
- Moses Ross, political Robocalls.com, representing the American Association of Political Consultants
